im going to start playing the guitar and my dad is macking me use his and i need my own

Based on my experience, learning guitar won’t be impossible as long as you are willing to practice every day. You might not think you sound so good in the beginning, but you’ll notice a difference as time passes. As for a guitar, you really should never buy one online unless you’ve already tried it out, to make sure you like it. Also, you shouldn’t look for a cheap guitar, because quality really takes a dive (bad intonation, staying in tune poorly, etc.) once you reach a certain point. And that WILL make learning properly even harder for you. Unless you really hate your dad’s guitar, you should use it until you can get a decent beginner’s guitar.

I hope your Dad is teaching you proper hand and finger position, otherwise you’re likely to learn wrong and have all kinds of problems–maybe even repetitive motion injuries.

The cheapest guitars online are at your local freecycle group.

The next least expensive are at http://www.shopgoodwill.com but be aware that any used instruments there are likely to need adjustment or repair.

Then there’s ebay. Buy there if there’s a warranty. Also other online resale sites like http://www.ioffer/com

Then http://www.musiciansfriend.com and other online shops. Don’t fail to look at the scratch-n-dent and closeout departments.

Don’t buy a guitar sight unseen on the Internet. You need to go to a music store that sells a variety of different guitar brands, try out a bunch of different guitars, listen to them, see how they feel in your hands, and compare them to find the one you like best, before you buy Every guitar is just a little different so if you find one you like, you need to buy THAT one — even another one of the same make and model might not feel or sound exactly the same.

You DON’T need your own guitar right away, especially if all you can afford right now is a cheap instrument. If your Dad’s got a good guitar and is willing to let you practice on his — take advantage of this! Use his for a while, save your money — and then after you’ve learned how to play a little bit and have a better idea of what you want in a guitar, get him to chip in with you to buy you a really good guitar of your own.
