If you can scrape together $400 this is an awesome deal but won't last long. This guitar will blow the others you mentioned away..I own the Schecter as well as Epiphone and Squire. No joke, the Schecter plays like a $1000 guitar. It was a great deal at $699, but is on clearance for $399. They will go fast...I promise. The C1 Classic I purchased sold out in about a week. This Schecter sounds, plays and feels better than my American Gibson LP and Fender American Deluxe Tele.

In that range, quality will be very similar.

Epiphones under 1000 bucks (and especially the low end like you are talking) come apart. Chrome and plastic hardware. Not good. But they put decent (for the cheapest of the cheap) electronics in. Myself, I would never touch a cheap Epiphone.

For cheap electric guitars (maybe acoustic too... I've never owned one of theirs) Ibanez really excels in the low-end. I have a 300 dollar Ibanez Les Paul copy (their model: ART 100) that is pretty impressive for a 300 dollar guitar. Their RG series is famous for being low-priced, good quality (for the price) rock guitar.

According to most people, you don't really get a 'good quality guitar' for under 1000 dollars, which is true to a point. But I'm not playing at the Palladium tonight, and I'm guessing you aren't either. I wouldn't go less than a 200 dollar guitar (and it better be on sale) for a beginner.

And while the quality may not be GREAT, mass production has come a long way. A 300-500 dollar Chinese-built guitar sounds just fine in your garage.
References :
I always enjoy the pawn shop answer, I'd like to meet these people, as I have no conscience and love relieving people of there money while making them think there getting such a great deal, as PT Barnum said, there's a sucker born every minute. take a look at the Ibanez too. all the manufactures in that price range need to be on there toes, so the quality will be about the same, make crap the word gets out and you wont sell your product, after that it's all about style, options, and sound, and I don't know your preference so I cant say. but for an electric I usually play a Gretsch Duo Jet or a Rickenbacker 360 if that helps.
References :
Epiphany is a fine guitar, sometimes running into th thousands. I would check out the pawn shops.
You want one with its strings very close to the frets for easy noting. I have a D-28 Martin that I love.
The Yamaha sounds very much like my Martin and is several hundred $ cheaper. If you get a good
acoustic guitar, you can put a pick-up on it. You can also take it on outings and play it where
you don't have to be plugged in. Good luck and have fun.
References :
In the $200 -$300 range the quality is going to be pretty much the same. It comes down to a preference of pickups, style, or even color.
