Go to a reputable music store and buy a guitar chord book that has basic music theory in it. It can teach you notation and some simple melodies--probably old tunes dating back to the 1800s, but they work.

They will also have the chord names above the appropriate note changes. There is much to concentrate upon in guitar, but chords, rhythm, and basic theory should be your immediate goal.

That is the way I learned over 50 years ago.
References :
I advise you don't teach your self. Maybe the basics but not chords and all. Get a teacher so you don't make habits that are wrong and once you get those habits, they will be hard to get rid of
References :
i agree with all the answers, and just want to add, play for hours and hours straight! i started playing when i was 13 (after piano, violin, and other instruments) and now at age 26 and being so busy, i've lost what i ever taught myself when i used to play for six hours at least a day.
References :
search Guitar TAB and try learning a few folk songs...'jingle bells' or 'twinkle, twinkle, little star'...then convert the tab into notes.
tune strings from top to bottom:E(Metallica), and D(Tool).
6=E, D
5=A, G:
4=D, C
3=G, F
2=B, A
1=E, D
learn other ways to tune the guitar..

Then learn major and minor chords...one thing will lead to another.
References :
i taught myself to play the guitar. i basicaly got some music that i wanted to learn how to play and then looked at the chords that made that song up.

it was mainly GCD so i learned the G chord. i then learned the C and then just worked on that one transition. i just practiced and practiced and kept working on those transitions and then the rhythm just came to me
References :
good luck

Try computer aided learning, you plug in the guitar into the computer via a special socket and let the software show you how good you have developed and learn new skills this way.

Ask your musical store about this option as there are plenty of differnet software for your level of skill if you have a computer to write this question in the Yahoo Answers, that is!

I do not know which one but I have seen one when I wanted to learn a piano software but this didn't help me as I am hearing impaired so I decided to focus on sight reading instead.
