What should I play on my electric guitar to impress 8 year old kids?
Posted in kids guitar | December 26th, 2009
I’m playing at a little workshop at a school today and I’ll be playing in front of 8/9 year old kids. But I don’t want to bore em out so does anyone have any ideas for what sorta stuff I should play? Also, its a 10 minute session.
Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, would be a nice idea. YOU ARE IN A BIG PILE OF TROUBLE! How did you get yourself into this? Just talk to them about the boring guitar parts, say some things about music theory and then play the song. It will get them sleeping in no time! And then their teachers will be thankful to you, forever!

There’s a brand of guitar called First Act. If you are buying the guitar for the kids, then those are the cheapest you can go pretty much. i believe you can get them at Fred Meyers

Eklund’s version of La bamba is childish in nature.

I have kids this age and trust me, don’t assume they will like little kid music because they don’t. My kids are into current pop music so if you know any along these lines that they can sing along to or know the words to. It’s the mtv generation isn’t it. Usually stuff that’s in the top 20.

Either Free Bird, Through the Fire and Flames by Dragon Force, or One by Metallica. They would get a kick out of seeing someone play something in reality that they can only do in a vidio game. Just annother reason to hate guitar hero, though. Turns kids on to horrible songs. Personally, I would rather hear Eruption or Crazy Train or Thunderstruck, but like I said before, kids don’t apprecate hard guitar licks.

Do you stuff like
hannah montana
jonas brothers
taylor swift
and i don’t really know what 8 year old guys listen to.
Umm, just practice a bunch of different songs, maybe then do a song request.
And to make them more excited to listen to you, tell them at the beginning that your giving away a guitar pick or those small 1/4 guitars that are a few bucks. then they’ll want to listen to you.
and then raffle off the guitar/picks/what ever you want to raffle off.

Hey:
If your playing to "impress" 8 year old’s, better hang up the guitar now. People who play to "impress" others usually don’t last to long and are playing for the wrong reasons.

Playing Hannah Montana will only impress the girls… Maybe play a couple of Hannah Monta/Jonas Brothers/High School Musical/Taylor Swift but if you notice that the kids aren’t paying much attention to you, try to play something a little bit more modern, maybe not so childish like just a popular song like Poker Face… just joking about Poker Face

Just make something up with sweeping or tapping, they seem really hard, and they’ll pay attention. Then teach them chords/scales/parts of the guitar, or whatever you want to teach them.

Sailor’s Hornpipe and that sort of stuff. It is bright, happy and a crowd pleaser, as well as danceable.

Anything. Chances are no matter what you play, you wont be able to keep an 8 year olds attention very long. They will be impressed with you no matter what you play. Throw on some distortion and play mary had a little lamb and they will think you’re the coolest dude to ever walk the earth.
